When the recent winter storm Jonas majorly hit the east coast, I was reminded that my parents teased us as kids about trying to get out of school with snow. They said we kids had it easy because they had to “walk up hill, both ways in 4 feet of snow to get to school.” While I know that they didn’t actually do that to go to school. I do know that everyone who goes to school has one thing to do, study. School kids study, it is part of who they are, and the job that they have. This makes me think about how we need to be constantly studying the Word of God. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” Did you catch that? Rightly dividing the Word of Truth. Rightly dividing the Word is called hermeneutics. We need to do proper hermeneutics because it will help us to take the Word of God and apply it to our lives. We typically think that studying is only for school kids or college kids, but in reality it is something that we all must do. Maybe though you don’t know where to start. A good place to start is maybe read an entire book in one sitting. Another good place to start is to outline the passage that you are studying. An important thing to remember as we study the Word of God is to make sure that we ask God to show us what He is saying to us. The Holy Spirit is there to guide us as we study His Word. Are you studying God’s Word or are you just reading it to read it so that you have done your duty? What are you doing to deepen your relationship with God? Are you studying who He is through His Word?
