J.R.R. Tolkien has left a profound effect on our culture. He is known for one of the most popular fantasy book trilogies that exist today, The Lord of the Rings. These three books that Tolkien had written as 1 long story were the stories of hobbits, orcs, dwarves, elves, and men, all creatures he had imagined. One character in particular that Tolkien created was “Gollum.” This character was obsessed with the Ring of Power within the storyline of “Lord of the Rings.” That Ring of Power was the key to everything. If the bad guy got it, all of “Middle-Earth” was doomed. Well Jesus is our ring of power. He has the absolute power, and He is the only one that can give us hope. In Lord of the Rings the character Gollum constantly called the ring, “My Precious.” We as Christians do not see Jesus as precious, we take Him for granted. We are not constantly obsessed with Jesus. We do not fully appreciate what He has done for us. Peter calls Jesus precious in 1 Peter 2: 7, “Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious.” If we believe on Jesus, He must be precious to us. Gollum went nuts and was destroyed because of his love for the ring, and we should go nuts for Jesus. We should let Him be in control of us, and He should be precious to us. Is He precious to you? Have you taken Him for granted? Are you allowing Jesus to consume you so that everyone around you can see the side effects of Jesus in your life? Is He really your Precious?
